Showcasing the mystical imagery of the rock art of the East Kimberley – encompassing some 50,000 sq. kilometres from Prince Regent River area, Kwini district, Gibb River Road and Purnululu (Bungle Bungles). To the Aboriginal people who live in these areas, the Wandjina and Gwion Gwion (Gyorn Gyorn) paintings have a deep and meaningful relationship with their heritage and culture.
The Wandjina is said to be the Rain Spirit by the Wunambul, Wororra and Ngarinyin language people – the controller of the "Seasons", the bringer of rain which equals "life". She is the Woongurr – the Leader – she commands respect and she has great powers.
The Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) figures are symmetrical, beautifully executed – at times with elaborate headwear of conical shape with intricate "knotted" trails giving a sophisticated and elegant picture.
The artists from this area transpose onto canvas, bark and slate the imagery with which they are so familiar, living in perfect harmony.
