The use of Garliwun (natural tree resin) as a binder for ochre dates back as far as the earliest Australian Aboriginal people, as a matter of necessity. In more recent times, it has been favoured by a small number of artists to gain a particular effect – to enhance the colour of the ochre, to create a shine on the natural matt ochre finish, as a feature or a contrast in a landscape work.
When used as an overlay on the total completed work, the image is that of a painting on a wooden board, rather than the actual canvas.
Tommy uses the technique to perfection – it highlights his strong, minimal style.
