About the Artist

Warlukurlangu Artists (Yuendumu) Art Centre

Warlukurlangu Artists is based in the community of Yuendumu, some 300kms northwest of Alice Springs. It is one of the longest established Aboriginal owned art centres in Australia. It also supports artists from the nearby Warlpiri communities of Nyirripi and Yuelumu. Warlukurlangu was established in 1985, stemming from senior elder Paddy Japaljarri Stewart's involvement in painting the iconic Papanya School mural in the early 1970's.

The artists of Warlukurlangu (Yuendumu) paint a diverse subject matter. Many tell the creation stories from Dreamtime, others focus on their connection to country, depicting features and characteristics of the landscape including native animals and flora.

Warlukurlangu Artists aim to share Warlpiri culture and spread awareness of Aboriginal culture as a whole in addition to supporting Indigenous causes.

Warlukurlangu has been producing its signature colourful but traditional Aboriginal art for many decades and has both a national and international profile having exhibited extensively throughout Australia and around the world.

Warlukurlangu means ‘Belonging to Fire’ in the local Walpiri language and is named after a Fire Dreaming site west of Yuendumu.
