About the Artist
c. 1940 - 2022
Betty was born on Texas Downs Station, c. 1940. Her mother and father both worked on Texas Downs station and at Turkey Creek. Her father was a police tracker. Betty is now a senior law woman and artist.
Since commencing to paint with the Warmun Art Centre in 1998 Betty has travelled widely to promote the art and culture of her people.
The Carrington women have established themselves as talented artists – Betty’s eldest daughter, Sade, is an International Artist. Sade’s daughter Charlene Carrington is an exciting third generation senior artist and now Charlene’s children, especially her eldest daughter April Nulgit, are following in the footsteps of these great women, the fourth generation of ochre artists.
Betty has a huge extended family and describes the largest room in her house – where she lives at Warmun with her husband Patrick Mung Mung – with having “wall to wall children” every night.
Betty paints her home country of Texas Downs, Purnululu, the area around Warmun and Turkey Creek, her father’s country – Darrajayn (Springvale) and Dowooloon (Anne Springs) as well as themes representing the Ngarrangkarni (Dreaming) stories she willingly teaches the youngsters.
