Artist Profile
Annie Nelson Napangardi is an Anmatyerre artist born in 1968 at Ti Tree, a small community approximately two hours north of Alice Springs in Central Australia. She is the daughter of respected senior elder and artist Polly Nelson Nungala and grew up surrounded by the cultural knowledge, stories and traditions of her family and Country.
Annie began her artistic career creating wood carvings and handcrafted jewellery before turning to painting in the early 2000s. Her works draw upon important women’s stories and bush tucker themes from Central Australia, including Bush Plum, Bush Bean, Bush Berries and Women’s Ceremony, also known as Awelye.
Annie is recognised for her intricate fields of fine dots, which flow across the canvas in layered, organic patterns. Through subtle changes in colour and movement, her paintings evoke the abundance of seeds, berries and native plants scattered across the desert landscape.
Her artworks reflect the close relationship between Anmatyerre women, Country and the seasonal food sources that have sustained their people for countless generations. They also honour the ceremonial knowledge, songs and traditions associated with gathering bush foods and caring for the land.
Artwork Description
This painting depicts Arnwekety, the bush plum, an important native food traditionally gathered by Aboriginal women throughout Central Australia.
Bush plums grow across the desert landscape and are collected when the fruit is in season. Women travel across Country gathering the fruit and passing on knowledge about where it grows, when it is ready to harvest and how it may be prepared and used.
The bush plum is also connected to important women’s ceremonies, songs and stories. During these ceremonies, women honour the spirit of the plant and celebrate its role in sustaining their families and communities. These traditions help maintain the connection between people, Country and the continuing cycles of growth and renewal.
Annie represents the bush plum and its seeds through thousands of finely painted dots. The delicate lines and flowing patterns suggest the movement of women travelling across Country, the spread of native plants through the landscape and the abundance of food found after seasonal rains.
Through this work, Annie pays respect to the bush plum and to the cultural knowledge held and passed down by generations of Anmatyerre women.
