This painting of Texas Downs station shows Buffalo Hole country up to the north – this is where my aunty (International artist Nancy Nodea) was born in the bush under a snappy gum tree. This is the start of Kungame Creek, and where, long time ago, the old lady began her journey to push the rock right up the creek to make a dam so there would be lots of fish for the people. As she travelled, that rock got bigger and bigger but in this part of the creek it is very small. This is a Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) story, but the rock is still there today. The children come here and throw pieces of bread in the water, and all the little fish swarm around to eat it. Keeps the kids happy for hours. This is a family camping spot, close to where we live now at Turkey Creek. Our family comes here as often as we can – it does us all good to get back to the bush and we have had so many happy times here on Texas Downs, which is my family’s country.
