Charlene has painted her father’s country – Texas Downs. Charlene’s Father and Aunty (International Artist’s Churchill Cann and Nancy Nodea) are the traditional custodians of this country. In this artwork Charlene has executed a large ‘map’ of the area, with the tributaries of the rivers running through the middle of the work and the roads leading to important areas on Texas Downs where the women perform ceremony and the families go to camp at holiday time. Rather than depict one ‘season’, Charlene has used various colours in the artwork to show the different times of the year. Green is after the wet when the rivers are flowing, red and brown is before the wet, when the earth is dry and the rains are not far away and the orange depicts the dry season when Women’s Ceremony is performed (June/July).
