Cindy was born on Santa Teresa mission and now lives at Mulga Bore, a remote desert community on the Utopia homelands near Alice Springs. Cindy has been painting for over 20 years. Her works tell the stories of Ceremonies relating to initiation, seasonal changes and general women’s business form a very important part of aboriginal society. The body-paint designs are learnt whilst applying paint to the chest, breasts and shoulders of women about to partake in ceremony. These images relate to “Awelye” (dreaming) and are significant to the ceremonies and rituals that are the basis of aboriginal culture.
Artwork Description
In this artwork, Cindy depicts the Bush Tucker so important to the desert people, especially for the women when they went into the desert for “Women’s Business”. The roundels depict the sites where the women gathered for girls’ initiation and other cultural Law matters. The women sit around the waterholes, with the waterholes being full in the dry desert land. Due to this, there was plenty of bush tucker around for the women to eat during the sometimes very long period of time they camped out for Women’s Business. As well as the bush tucker Cindy has included intricate patterns that illustrates the body paint design associated with the ceremony and country. The design is painted onto the women’s upper bodies during times of ceremonies.
