Artist Profile
Debra Umala is a talented contemporary Pitjantjatjara artist from Mimili Community in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. Born in Alice Springs in 1979, Debra has lived most of her life on Country in Mimili and today divides her time between the APY Lands and Adelaide.
Debra comes from a strong artistic family and is the daughter of respected artist Angkaliya Curtis. Surrounded by artists throughout her life, she developed a deep connection to culture, storytelling and traditional knowledge from an early age. Her husband also comes from a well-known family of Papunya artists, further strengthening the artistic traditions surrounding her family.
Her paintings are inspired by the landscapes, water sources and Dreaming stories connected to her ancestral Country. Debra is particularly recognised for her depictions of Wanampi (Rainbow Serpent), Kapi Tjukula (Many Rockholes) and Kaliny-Kalinypa (Honey Grevillea). Through these works she celebrates the importance of water, survival, family and the ongoing connection between people and Country.
Debra’s artistic style combines traditional Central and Western Desert dot painting techniques with a bold contemporary use of colour and movement. Her vibrant palettes of magenta, pink, turquoise, yellow and deep desert reds create striking works filled with rhythm, energy and symbolism. Using layered dot work, flowing line patterns and expressive brushwork, she creates paintings that are both culturally rich and visually dynamic.
Like many artists from the APY Lands, Debra paints from lived experience and inherited knowledge. She often recalls visiting important waterholes and sacred sites with her mother as a child, and now takes her own children and grandchildren to these same places to swim, gather and learn about Country. Her artworks reflect this ongoing cultural transmission and the importance of passing stories and knowledge to future generations.
Alongside her painting practice, Debra has also been involved in community arts and cultural programs, previously working with Mimili Maku Arts and later with the APY Gallery in Adelaide. She is also known for her involvement in Tjanpi weaving and for her strong advocacy within her community.
Debra Umala’s paintings beautifully balance tradition and innovation, offering contemporary interpretations of ancient stories while remaining deeply grounded in Pitjantjatjara culture and Country.
Artwork Description
This painting depicts Wanampi, the powerful Rainbow Serpent spirit that appears throughout many Aboriginal Dreaming stories across Australia.
In Pitjantjatjara culture, Wanampi is an ancient and highly respected ancestral being connected to the creation of the landscape and the protection of important water sources. During the Creation period, Wanampi travelled across Country, shaping mountains, valleys, rivers, rockholes and watercourses as it moved through the land.
Wanampi is believed to inhabit deep waterholes and sacred places throughout the desert. Anangu people hold great respect for these powerful spirits and continue traditional practices of acknowledging and communicating with Wanampi before approaching certain water sources.
Debra Umala’s interpretation of Wanampi combines traditional storytelling with a striking contemporary style. Using flowing lines, layered dot work and bold colour contrasts, she creates a strong sense of movement and energy across the canvas, evoking the spirit’s journey through the landscape.
The winding forms within the painting represent the movement of Wanampi across Country, while surrounding patterns symbolise waterholes, ceremonial sites and the interconnected landscape of the APY Lands. Through her vibrant palette and rhythmic composition, Debra brings this important ancestral story to life while honouring the ongoing cultural significance of Wanampi within Pitjantjatjara tradition.
