Artwork Story
This powerful painting by Edna Dale and her daughter Petrina, depicts Armalarr, a Wandjina spirit belonging to Ngarinyin Country at Bell Gorge, near the Imintji community in the West Kimberley. Armalarr is one of many sacred Wandjina figures connected to this Country, with stories passed down through generations of Edna’s family.
Edna is the daughter of the late Jack Dale Mengenen, a highly respected Ngarinyin elder and custodian of deep cultural knowledge. Jack played a vital role in the Wilinggin land claim and was a passionate teacher of Ngarinyin law, history and ceremony. Before his passing, he entrusted many of these stories and responsibilities to Edna, who now continues to share them through her artworks.
By painting the Wandjinas of her father’s Country, Edna honours his teachings and keeps the spiritual and cultural strength of Ngarinyin Country alive. Her daughter Petrina, also a dedicated artist, has learned from Edna and now paints alongside her — helping to continue this important legacy.
Through this work, Edna and Petrina honour their lineage, share the stories of Armalarr, and preserve the sacred traditions of Ngarinyin Country for future generations.
