Janet Golder Kngwarreye / Women’s Dreaming

An Anmatyerre artist raised within Utopia’s renowned painting and batik movement. Her wider practice draws on women’s narratives, ceremonies and Country passed down through an exceptional family of senior artists. She is an Anmatyerre artist whose artworks are deeply connected to the women’s narratives, ceremonies and cultural knowledge of her Country. Janet was born on 15 November 1973 at Mulga Bore, an outstation on the Utopia Homelands northeast of Alice Springs.

Janet spent formative years surrounded by the artists of Utopia and learned by watching members of her lineage paint and share the narratives belonging to their Country. She was also growing up during the development of the Utopia batik movement, when women started transferring designs previously created in ceremony, body painting and sand drawing onto silk and, later, canvas. Janet’s work has been exhibited across Australia and internationally and has also featured in several prominent public projects.
