How Artworks Are Sent

Ochre / Kimberley artworks are shipped on canvas or linen, already stretched, ready to hang unless stated otherwise.

Acrylic artworks are shipped on canvas or linen un-stretched, rolled up in a cardboard tube unless stated otherwise.

These artworks will need to be stretched around a wooden frame before hanging

This can be done by nearly any picture framer (highly recommended) or you can DIY if you’re confident in your handiwork.

There are numerous "how to" videos on YouTube showing you how to achieve this.

Artist Profile

Artwork is accompanied by Yanda Aboriginal Art Certificate of Authenticity/Provenance. Artwork painted by the artist at Yanda Art Studio, NT

Jorna Newberry is a Pitjantjatjara artist, born c.1959 at Angus Downs in the Northern Territory. Jorna lives between the communities of Warakurna and Irrunytju and the township of Alice Springs where she has family. By travelling from the remote communities to the town, Jorna continues to live both the traditional Aboriginal life of her indigenous background and the contemporary culture of modern Australia.

When visiting her lands she regularly goes bush with the women of her community to participate in traditional ceremonies and bush tucker gathering. Jorna began painting in mid 1990s at Warakurna, and now paints for Yanda Art Gallery in NT.

Jorna worked closely alongside her uncle, the late Yannima Pikarli Tommy Watson who is internationally recognised as one of the most significant aboriginal artists of our time and has been a tremendous influence on her work. Tommy taught her to paint in a multi-layered abstract way, so as to maintain the secrecy of important cultural matters. She says “Uncle had a big influence on me. He teaches me to be respectful in the way I paint”.

Jorna’s style of art is exciting and fresh, she is definitely an artist with a huge career in front of her.

Artwork description

Recently, Jorna has developed a distinctive change in style, with a subtle colour palette of whites, creams and neutrals on a black background. This artwork represents Ngintaka, a giant perentie lizard and creation ancestral being of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara people. The Ngkintaka songline is the major creation story of the Angatja area, and indicates the significant spiritual connection to their lands. Perentie are tracked for long distances and hunted for food.
