How Artworks Are Sent

Ochre / Kimberley artworks are shipped on canvas or linen, already stretched, ready to hang unless stated otherwise.

Acrylic artworks are shipped on canvas or linen un-stretched, rolled up in a cardboard tube unless stated otherwise.

These artworks will need to be stretched around a wooden frame before hanging

This can be done by nearly any picture framer (highly recommended) or you can DIY if you’re confident in your handiwork.

There are numerous "how to" videos on YouTube showing you how to achieve this.

Artist Profile

Joy Petyarre was born in 1965 at Boundary Bore, Utopia, Northern Territory. She is the daughter of the late Glory Ngarla, a well-known Utopian artist, and sister to the highly acclaimed Anna Price Petyarre. Coming from one of the most famous painting families in Australia, Joy grew up surrounded by creativity and culture.

In her early years, Joy learned the art of batik from her mother, a skill that shaped her strong sense of design and colour. She later transitioned to painting on canvas with acrylics, developing her own distinctive style characterised by intricate fine dot work, layered patterns, and subtle tonal shifts. Her works often depict Bush Tobacco Plant and Yam Dreaming stories, drawing inspiration from the landscape and ancestral traditions of her Country.

The passing of her mother in 2002 had a profound impact on Joy, and she stepped away from painting for a time. With encouragement from her sister Anna, she eventually returned to her art, creating works that reflect both her technical mastery and deep emotional connection to her heritage.

Glory Ngarla was known for her vibrant batik work and remarkable eye for colour—qualities Joy has clearly inherited. Like her mother, Joy favours intricate detail and harmonious palettes that bring a sense of rhythm and movement to her canvases. Her paintings beautifully express the continuing strength of women’s stories and knowledge within her family.

Joy Petyarre’s artworks have been exhibited in group shows and are represented in significant collections including Holmes à Court and Artbank.

Artwork Description

Joy paints the seed of the Bush Yam. The Desert yam is an important food source for the Aboriginal people from Utopia in central Australia. It has an impressive root system, spreading up to twelve metres from the stalk, and is commonly found in woodland areas nearby a water source. Its bright green leaves and yellow flowers, can spread over quite a wide area, growing strongly until after the rainfall months when it is harvested by digging it out of the ground. By depicting the Yam Dreaming in their paintings, indigenous artists are able to pay homage to this significant plant and encourage its continual rejuvenation.

The women perform in their Awelye ceremonies certain songlines and dance cycles to show respect for their country and to ensure continues productivity of the Desert yam.
