Karen Bird Ngale / Awelye and Bush Medicine (19862)

Born in 1984, Karen Bird Ngale is an Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia region of Central Australia. She is the youngest daughter of the late renowned Utopia artist and senior elder for Ilkawerne Country, Lindsay Bird Mpetyane (c.1942-2024), and the younger sister of fellow artists Rosie Bird and Jessie Bird.

Karen lives at Akaye Soakage in the Utopia region, where she remains closely connected to her ancestral Country and cultural traditions. From an early age she learned the stories, songs, dances and ceremonial knowledge associated with Awelye from senior women in her community, while also developing her artistic skills by watching her father paint and learning from his artistic practice.

Today Karen is recognised as one of the most exciting artists of the younger generation emerging from Utopia. Her paintings draw upon traditional knowledge of bush foods, bush medicine and women’s ceremonies, expressed through vibrant colour, intricate patterning and highly detailed compositions.

Karen’s work celebrates the richness of Anmatyerre Country, depicting the plants, seeds, flowers and natural resources that sustain life in the desert. Through her paintings she shares both the beauty of the landscape and the cultural knowledge that has been passed down through countless generations, continuing the strong artistic legacy of her family while developing a distinctive style of her own.

Karen Bird Ngale paints the bush foods, medicinal plants and flowering species found throughout her Anmatyerre Country in the Utopia region of Central Australia. Her paintings celebrate the abundance of the desert landscape and the deep cultural knowledge passed down through generations of women.

This artwork depicts a rich tapestry of bush tucker and bush medicine plants growing across Country after seasonal rains. Karen combines many important food sources, seeds, flowers and medicinal plants within a single composition, creating a vibrant map of the landscape and its resources.

Among the plants represented are Alpar (Rat-Tail Goosefoot), a highly valued bush medicine and food plant whose protein-rich seeds have traditionally been harvested and prepared by Anmatyerre people. Also depicted are flowering species, native fruits, edible seeds and medicinal plants that continue to play an important role in daily life and cultural practice.

The distinctive U-shaped motifs that appear throughout Karen’s paintings represent Awelye, the sacred women’s ceremonies of Central Australia. These designs reference the ceremonial body paint patterns traditionally applied during Awelye, celebrating women’s connection to Country, kinship, cultural knowledge and ancestral stories. By incorporating these motifs alongside depictions of bush foods and medicinal plants, Karen brings together important aspects of Anmatyerre culture and identity.

Through her vibrant colour palette and intricate patterning, Karen creates a celebration of Country, sharing the beauty, knowledge and traditions that have sustained her people for countless generations.
