Karen Bird Ngale / Bush Medicine Dreaming

Karen Bird Ngale is an Anmatyerre artist from Akaye Soakage in the Utopia region. Born in 1984, she is the youngest daughter of senior Ilkawerne Elder and artist Lindsay Bird Mpetyane, and the sister of painters Rosie Bird and Jessie Bird. Her early education in art and culture came from both sides of this family tradition.

Senior women taught Karen the songs, dances, stories and ceremonial knowledge connected with Awelye. At the same time, she watched her father work and absorbed his disciplined approach to painting. Her own canvases explore women’s ceremony, bush foods and medicine, bringing inherited knowledge into a fresh visual language. Remaining close to her ancestral Country, Karen represents a younger generation carrying Utopia’s cultural and artistic traditions forward.
