Artist Profile
Katie was born at Texas Downs Station and was fortunate to have an education at Beagle Bay. She relocated to Warmun after her schooling and began teaching the children on the Community – an occupation which she is still involved with today.
Katie comes from a family of talented artists – her aunts Lena Nyadbi and Goody Barrett introduced her to painting, and she was encouraged by her brother, International Artist Churchill Cann, and other established artists. Her husband is renowned artist, Tommy Carroll.
Katie not only has a style of her own which is varied, bold and yet often whimsical (as in her “Devil Dog” work), but she is meticulous in method and fastidious in detail. Her paintings are invariably accompanied by a Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) story.
She has participated in many Exhibitions, collected by the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House Collection – most definitely a collectable artist for the investor or those who enjoy a beautiful piece of art on their wall.

Artwork Description
This story happened in the dreamtime (Ngarrangkarni). Eagle and Crane went hunting for rock wallaby. They found some on top of a cave (shown here in the middle of the painting in brown). Eagle told crane, ‘I’ll get them and throw them down to you.’ While eagle was on top of the cave, he got each rock wallaby and kept the fat ones for himself and gave the little skinny ones to the crane. Next they went down to the creek to cook up their wallabies. Eagle sat upstream and crane sat down stream. Crane said to eagle, ‘Let’s go look for ground sugarbag while we wait for these wallabies to cook.’ They found a cave and crane said to eagle to go in and get the wild honey: ‘Go in more, go in more,’ said the crane. So eagle went in more and more, and them crane blocked the opening with spinifex grass and lit the grass. Crane went back to the river and ate all of eagles fat wallabies. The eagle found another way out of the cave. He too went back to the river, but this time he cleared a place next to the river, but he also put a sharp stick in the ground and then called over crane to come and talk in this nice clean spot. Crane came over and sat down, right on top on the sharp stick. He cried out, the noise that we know today as a crane’s call. The Eagle flew off making his bird call.
