Artist Profile
Mary Gibson is an established Pitjantjatjara artist who lives at Tjukurla, Western Australia. Mary was born in the bush at Kurnilwarri, halfway between Tjukurla and Patjarr. As a child she lived as a traditional nomad with her family, before eventually settling in Papunya, Northern Territory. She returned to live at Patjarr where she began to paint in 1994.
Mary Gibson is married to senior law man and artist Kelly Peterman. Her son is artist Bob Gibson Tjungarrayi.

Artwork Description
This painting depicts Karku, Mary’s mother’s country. There are many tali (sandhills) at Karku. Mary steadily works her away across the canvas, repeating motifs that are part of a visual language unique to the Western Desert, to allow for a continuation of traditional forms and stories.
