Artist Profile
Born in 1956, Mary Ross Napurrula is an elder from the aboriginal community of Ali-Curung, 160km south-east of Tennant Creek. She moved to Alice Springs in early 2000. Her father, Jack Yaula Jogora-Jagamarra Long taught her to paint. Her mother was Ruby Wanamalyini, also from Willowra, Northern Territory. She has been painting for many years and says “when I used to see the old people paint as a young girl I used to paint with them”.
Artwork Description
Damper Seed Dreaming depicts the seeds which Aboriginal women collect to grind to make bush damper. The pattern represents the delicate seeds of the plant as well as the all important desert waterholes. Mary’s style consists of beautiful intricate dot work that often moves from a central point. By painting the seeds Mary is paying homage to the spirit of the plant in the hope that it will regenerate, enabling the people to use it to make food.
