Reggie Sultan / Bushfire Dreaming

Reggie began with Namatjira-style landscapes, learning by watching older painters along the Todd River and selling his first work through the mission store. After years of fencing and stock work on cattle stations, he became a full-time artist in 1985 and began telling stories with dots, symbols and small figures.

His scenes of people hunting, gathering bush food and finding water are set against strong reds, yellows and ochres, often over speckled backgrounds made with leaves. In 2026 his painting of the 1928 Coniston killings was a Telstra NATSIAA finalist and was acquired by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Reggie is also the author of an autobiography and an illustrated Seven Sisters book, and has painted a mural at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.
