How Artworks Are Sent
Ochre / Kimberley artworks are shipped on canvas or linen, already stretched, ready to hang unless stated otherwise.
Acrylic artworks are shipped on canvas or linen un-stretched, rolled up in a cardboard tube unless stated otherwise.
These artworks will need to be stretched on a stretcher board before hanging.
This can be done by nearly any picture framer (highly recommended) or you can DIY if you’re confident in your handiwork.
There are numerous "how to" videos on YouTube showing you how to achieve this.
Rosendo (Ross) Karadada, named after one the Spanish monks of the Benedictine Mission at Kalumburu, was born in 1954 in Kalumburu and is the second son of Lily and Jack Karadada and part of one of the most famous artistic families in the Kimberley. His mother Lily is an International artist and the best known of the Wandjina (rock art) painters. Ross is following the family tradition of portraying Wandjina.
A family man, Ross lives at Kalumburu Community, Mitchell Plateau, on the far north coast of Western Australia. He is not a prolific painter, and lists fishing and hunting as his favourite pastimes. He is an accomplished carver and his carved boabs and slates are some of the best in the region.
It is said that the Wandjina spirit figure is the embodiment of the rain spirit and ancestor of the Woonambal people. Found in the plateau areas along the North Kimberley coast, painted on rocks and the walls of caves, by long gone artisans, they are always pictured from a frontal aspect with no mouths, and large black eyes and a slit or beak-like nose, with the veil of dots suggesting raindrops.
Dreamtime mythology has it that the Wandjina emerged from the clouds, and will return in that manner, while other versions suggest that Dumbi, the Owl, is the model.
Ross portrays the icon, amongst the rocks, with his ‘bush tucker’.
