1954 – 2023
Rosendo (Ross) Karadada, named after one the Spanish monks of the Benedictine Mission at Kalumburu, was born in 1954 in Kalumburu and is the second son of Lily and Jack Karadada and part of one of the most famous artistic families in the Kimberley. His mother Lily is an International artist and the best known of the Wandjina (rock art) painters. Ross followed the family tradition of portraying Wandjina.
A family man, Ross lived at Kalumburu Community, Mitchell Plateau, on the far north coast of Western Australia for his entire life. He was not a prolific painter, and listed fishing and hunting as his favourite pastimes. He was an accomplished carver and his carved boabs and slates are some of the best in the region.
Ross passed away peacefully after a short illness in his beloved Kalumburu in 2023.
Artist's Description
It is said that the Wandjina spirit figure is the embodiment of the rain spirit and ancestor of the Wunambal, Ngarinyin and Worrora peoples of the north west Kimberley region of Western Australia, where ancient artisans reproduced their images on the walls of the caves and rock formations of the plateau areas along the coast and hinterland. They are always pictured, in ochres and clays, from a frontal aspect, with no mouths, and large blacks eyes and a slit or beak-like nose. The icons are usually depicted in a veil of dots representing the blood and water mix of man and animal.
Dreamtime mythology has it that the Wandjina emerged from the rain clouds, and will return in that manner, other versions suggest that Dumbi, the Owl, is the model, thus it is prominent in some of the stories. Ross pictures Wandjina with some of the trappings of the ‘real’ world, including, a bark bush-bucket, coolamon, digging stick and hunting boomerang.
