Shirley Puruntatameri is a respected Tiwi elder and artist born in 1965 on Bathurst Island. After spending her early years in Wurrumiyanga (Bathurst Island), Shirley attended St. Therese’s School in the mid-1980s before later moving to Pirlangimpi, where she raised her six children.
Once her children were grown, Shirley began working with Munupi Arts, contributing her strong cultural knowledge and connection to Country to her creative practice. Her artworks reflect Tiwi design traditions and the ceremonial stories she carries as an elder within her community.
Shirley’s work is held in significant public and private collections, including the Art Gallery of South Australia. Her contributions help preserve and continue the visual traditions of Tiwi culture through both painting and dance.

Artwork Story
During ceremony on the Tiwi Islands a series of ‘yoi’ (dances), are performed; some are totemic (inherited from the person's Mother) and some serve to act out the narrative of newly composed songs. Participants in these ceremonies are painted with turtiyanginari (the different natural ochre colours) in varying designs, transforming the dancers and, in some cases, providing protection against recognition by mapurtiti (spirits). These designs can be applied in different ways, one of which is using the finger, or in this case a brush. Painting of the face also occurs. These significant artistic designs collectively are called ‘Jilamara’.
