Theresa Burak was born in 1975 and completed her schooling at Slade College in Brisbane in 1991. After returning home, she worked at the Yikikini Women’s Centre alongside her mother and sisters, supporting Elders and helping collect and prepare bark for Tunga (bark basket) making.
She also joined her mother, the late Susan Wanji Wanji, and other Tiwi women in gathering pandanus and natural dyes for weaving. Theresa later continued her arts practice at Munupi Arts, where she welcomed visitors, shared the stories behind artworks, and worked closely with other artists.
Theresa holds a Certificate II in Arts & Crafts from Batchelor Institute. Her practice spans painting, weaving and jewellery-making, and she has participated in numerous exhibitions and art events. In 2005 she travelled to Brisbane after being nominated for the Momentos Awards for her stingray-inspired jewellery collection.
