Tommy was born in 1956 at Doon Doon Station in the East Kimberley and worked as a stockman for many years. His knowledge of the country in which he worked is extensive and the pivotal focus of his paintings.

He is a natural – his style is strong, individual, balanced, striking. It is obvious that he has never followed in anyone’s footsteps – his works are most definitely by Tommy Carroll. The paintings flow with the landscape – from minimal yet precise black and white to vibrant reds and bright yellow to the softer black/brown/green of his grandfather, Paddy Carroll’s country.

He has participated in Solo and Group Exhibitions throughout Australia – his paintings have been acquired by important collectors, the National Gallery of Australia and the Parliament House Collection. Tommy’s works are popular world-wide, as many collectors from America, Germany and Holland have discovered and collected and continue to commission works by this now well established artist.

A man of few words, a focused, professional artist – minimal by style, not by market preference.

This is right in the middle of Doon Doon Station, real tough country. High mountain country and rough tracks with sharp stones all around. This was pretty hard to muster up here, but the one good part was that there was always water around, filling up the waterholes from the rain coming down heavy from the top country. We left the mustering till late up here, because some of the other parts of the station didn’t have that water late in the season. The Goorlabool (Rainbow Serpent) in the Dreamtime travelled all through here, making the waterholes and nowanns (caves) and leaving his eggs that are the big rocks in this country. The waterholes are called Gularing. This is how the country looks in real hot time with the grass all dried up and just Spinifex to keep the cattle going till muster is finished. In sit-down time (Christmas) my grandfather Paddy Carroll would take me camping out this way – further to the south on the flatlands though – and we’d fish and hunt and sit of a night time and look up at this rough top country. He told me the stories and showed me the land and it sure helped me later on when I started working.
