Tommy Crow / Sunset Dreaming (TC756)

Tommy Crow was born in Cunnamulla in south-west Queensland in 1966 and is a proud Mardgany man. His traditional name is Gural Warkarn, meaning Black Crow.

Tommy grew up with his family in a corrugated iron humpy on the outskirts of Cunnamulla. His father worked as a stockman and his mother was employed in a local store. The family had few material possessions and cooked over an outdoor fire, which also provided light and warmth. Tommy remembers spending much of his childhood exploring the bush, fishing and hunting with his brothers, uncles and Mardgany Elders. Through these experiences, he learnt practical bush skills as well as cultural knowledge and ways of caring for and living on Country.

Tommy’s father passed away when he was three years old and his mother died when he was thirteen. He then moved to Toowoomba to live with his Aunty Zona, who became an important role model during his teenage years. Tommy attended Mt Lofty High School and completed year 11. He developed an interest in art while at school, but initially pursued a trade, beginning a four-year spray-painting apprenticeship at the age of seventeen.

After completing his apprenticeship, Tommy travelled and worked throughout northern and central Queensland. He later spent four years in Roma working as a spray painter before moving to Alice Springs in 1992, at the age of twenty-six.

In Alice Springs, Tommy established a business called Crow Creations, making and painting didgeridoos. He also began performing with other musicians and artists, demonstrating the didgeridoo and sharing an understanding of Aboriginal culture with visitors. He later opened a larger gallery at the Red Centre Resort on the northern outskirts of Alice Springs.

Tommy was taught to paint by his Uncle Lenny in Charleville. His distinctive Sunset Dreaming imagery came to him in a dream or vision and developed into the style for which he is now best known. Tommy has described these paintings as depicting Aboriginal men performing ceremony, celebrating successful hunting expeditions and dancing with the Spirits within the land.

His panoramic paintings are immediately recognisable for their silhouetted figures, animals and trees set against brilliantly coloured skies. Men gather and dance around a glowing fire, carrying spears and boomerangs, while kangaroos, emus, brolgas and other animals move through the surrounding landscape. Long shadows, distant birds, stars and a rising or setting sun or moon give each scene its own atmosphere and sense of time passing.

Alongside his painting, Tommy has built a long career as a didgeridoo performer. He has performed at festivals, schools, private functions and corporate events throughout Australia and overseas. His performances have taken him to Germany, the United States and South Korea, as well as major Australian venues and events.

Tommy continues to paint, perform and take part in cultural and community projects. In 2025 he returned to Cunnamulla to perform at the Outback River Lights Festival and was included among the artists participating in Queensland Music Trails’ Outback Trail program. In 2026 he worked alongside Elder George Cooley on a collaborative mural project at St Paul’s College in Adelaide.

Through both his painting and music, Tommy shares stories of ceremony, hunting, animals, Spirits and life on Country. His Sunset Dreaming series has become a highly individual visual language, bringing together cultural storytelling and the dramatic colours of the Australian outback.

Tommy Crow’s Sunset Dreaming paintings capture the changing light of the Australian outback as day gives way to evening. Against richly layered skies, Aboriginal men gather around a glowing fire to dance and perform ceremony. Carrying spears and boomerangs, they celebrate hunting and their connection to the Spirits within the land.

Kangaroos and emus move through the surrounding landscape, while trees, birds, long shadows and a rising sun or moon create a strong sense of movement and time passing. The silhouetted figures and animals stand out against skies that shift from glowing yellows, oranges and reds to cool blues, greens and star-filled night.

Tommy has said that the Sunset Dreaming imagery first came to him as a vision. Through this distinctive style, he shares scenes of ceremony, hunting, animals and Country, bringing together cultural storytelling and the dramatic beauty of the outback sky.
