Artist Profile
Born in 1953 on the Burra Bee Dee Mission near Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Tony Sorby is a proud descendant of the Kamilaroi people. His Country stretches across vast areas of north-western NSW and into southern Queensland.
Like many Aboriginal children of his generation, Tony was taken from his family as a baby and raised in institutions and foster homes throughout NSW. It wasn’t until he was 12 years old that he discovered his Aboriginal heritage, and more than two decades later he was finally reunited with his family. These experiences profoundly shaped his sense of identity and the emotional depth that underpins his art.
Over the years, Tony worked in a wide range of occupations — from wool classing and tunnelling for the railways to running a market garden and teaching carpentry to young Indigenous people. His path to art began when a Czechoslovakian acquaintance introduced him to marquetry. This early exposure to fine craftsmanship sparked a lifelong fascination with creating visual stories.
In his early 30s, Tony undertook formal studies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture. During this time, he began experimenting with different media — including paint, wood stains and timber panels — before eventually finding his true medium on canvas and linen.
After a devastating fire destroyed his art business in 1996, Tony rebuilt from the ground up, refining both his style and his purpose. Today, his paintings combine ancient Kamilaroi stories with contemporary technique, exploring journey lines and sacred sites connected to his ancestors. His intricate layering, bold symbolism and intuitive compositions reveal a deep respect for cultural storytelling and Country.
When camping out on the land, Tony draws inspiration from the bush — from the creeks, rivers and landscapes that carry the memory of his people. Walking these places gives him a sense of belonging and renewal that continues to shape his creative journey.

Artwork Description
My paintings represent the Kamilaroi lands. This includes the sacred sites, trees, sandstone caves, escarpments, mountains, hunting tracks, hunting grounds, meeting places and the journey tracks and campsites of the Kamilaroi people. The blue lines coursing through some of my artworks depict water, representing two rivers, the Castlereagh & the Barwon, as well as creeks & Billabongs.
