Wandjina Art

Wandjina art is a unique and very special kind of Aboriginal art originating in Western Australia’s Kimberley region.

The Wunambal, Ngarinyin, and Worrorra peoples’ beliefs revolve around the Wandjina, who are ancestor spirits and rainmakers.

These figures, which are portrayed with big halo-like heads, huge eyes and no mouths are believed to regulate the weather and guarantee the rebirth of life.

These powerful pictures are preserved and repainted by traditional custodians using natural ochres on rock surfaces, caverns, and contemporary canvases.

Gwion Gwion Rock Art

Gwion Gwion rock art, also known as Bradshaw art, is one of the oldest and most enigmatic forms of Aboriginal rock art, found mainly in the Kimberley in Western Australia.

Estimated to be over 20,000 years old, these intricate, ochre-painted depictions feature elegant human-like figures adorned with headdresses, tassels, and detailed body ornamentation, suggesting ceremonial or ritual significance.

Gwion Gwion art is characterised by their fine lines, dynamic movement, and sophisticated composition, often resembling ancient depictions of dance or storytelling.

The origins and meaning of these artworks remain a topic of research and cultural significance, with some Aboriginal Elders describing them as the work of ancestral spirits, ensuring their stories endure across generations.
