In the Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) two young boys were following some old ladies who were getting bush food. The old ladies told them to stay by a Bloodwood tree and behave themselves. The boys saw some ant hills and they had eggs inside them. The old ladies said “Don’t touch them – don’t eat those eggs”. Well, the boys were naughty and they followed the ants’ trail and found all the ant hills and ate those eggs. Then they caught an owl and plucked its feathers and threw him into the air. Well, the whole sky turned pink and the biggest wind blew up. The women, who were in another place, knew something was very wrong. They knew those boys had done something wrong. The little lizard told the boys to go up to the limestone hills and be safe, but a long tailed lizard whipped the boys with his tail, and they fell back down next to the tree. The Goorlabool (Rainbow Serpent) came out from the waterhole and took those boys back into the water – they did the wrong thing. This story was told to me by my Aunty, Winnie Budbaria (Budburria) – Uncle Hector’s sister. It’s her way of telling it.
