Katie Cox / Dingo Dreaming (18565)

Katie was born at Texas Downs Station and was fortunate to have an education at Beagle Bay.  She relocated to Warmun after her schooling and began teaching the children on the Community – an occupation which she is still involved with today.

Katie comes from a family of talented artists – her aunts Lena Nyadbi and Goody Barrett introduced her to painting, and she was encouraged by her brother, International Artist Churchill Cann, and other established artists.  Her husband is renowned artist, Tommy Carroll.

Katie not only has a style of her own which is varied, bold and yet often whimsical (as in her “Devil Dog” work), but she is meticulous in method and fastidious in detail.  Her paintings are invariably accompanied by a Ngarrangkarni (Dreamtime) story.

She has participated in many Exhibitions, collected by the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House Collection – most definitely a collectable artist for the investor or those who enjoy a beautiful piece of art on their wall.

In the Ngarrankarni (Dreaming) a man went hunting with his dogs in Maraninjji country, in the Goomooloo hills. He didn’t look after those dingo dogs – he was wrong because he needed them to help him hunt. He made camp, fed himself, but didn’t give those dogs any water or food. The dogs were very cross and ran away. The next morning, the man went looking for them – he climbed one of the high hills and called and called for them. They wouldn’t come back. He stayed on that hill and turned into stone – some old people say the dingo dogs turned him into stone. He is there today on that hill in the high mountain country (seen here top right of the artwork).

(Gallery Note – Dingo Dreaming is a well known Dreamtime story of the Gija people. As with many of their stories, the moral is clear and in this particular scenario, it is noted that one must be kind to animals. The alternate names for this depiction are “Man Calling out for His Dogs” or “Devil Dog” and the iconography is representative of a particular area in Gija country).
