Mark Nodea / Yakinara Rockhole

Mark grew up in the East Kimberley learning from elders including Queenie McKenzie, Hector Jandany, Jack Britten and Rover Thomas. His mother, Nancy Nodea, was a custodian of Texas Downs Country, and through his father, Walmajarri elder Hanson Boxer, he also paints Country around Yakanarra and Cherabun.

Working mainly in ochre, he distils creeks, waterholes and landforms into spare, sweeping compositions. His kangaroo design was used on the Royal Australian Mint's 2002 silver dollar, and in 2013 his Texas Country won the City of Greater Geraldton Award for Excellence at the Mid West Art Prize. A former member of the all-Gija NORFORCE patrol, he co-painted the 2024 Napier Waller Art Prize Highly Commended work with fellow veterans. His solo shows in 2003 and 2020 both sold out.
