Artist Profile
Mavis Jugadai Napaltjarri was born in 1967 and is the niece of renowned indigenous artist Willy Tjungurrayi. Mavis was initially taught to paint by her mother Tilau Nungala in the 1990’s at Papunya, an area known to have fostered some of our most talented and famous Australian Aboriginal artists.
Mavis’ art is full of passion, colour and detailed beauty. She uses strong colours of the desert country of her heritage in bold and memorable brushwork. She paints particularly the Dreamings related to the country of “Yalka Dreaming”, the bush onion, passed on by her father and closely linked to “Kardinyanya”, a large hill found outside of Papunya, as well as detailed works of Women’s Ceremony.
Artwork Description
This painting depicts designs associated with Women’s Ceremonies in the artist’s desert country. The roundel in the artwork is representative of the waterholes or soakages which were the focal point of the places where these ceremonies were held. The plants depicted throughout the work are indicative of the bush foods of Mavis’s country where the ceremonies take place. The various groups came together to discuss the Law and initiate the young girls into the culture and traditions of their tribe.
