How Artworks Are Sent
Ochre / Kimberley artworks are shipped on canvas or linen, already stretched, ready to hang unless stated otherwise.
Acrylic artworks are shipped on canvas or linen un-stretched, rolled up in a cardboard tube unless stated otherwise.
These artworks will need to be stretched on a stretcher board before hanging.
This can be done by nearly any picture framer (highly recommended) or you can DIY if you’re confident in your handiwork.
There are numerous "how to" videos on YouTube showing you how to achieve this.
Artist Profile
Nina Maraltadj is an artist from Kalumburu, an Aboriginal community set deep in the Wandjina spirit country, situated on the banks of the King Edward River and is the furthermost permanent settlement along the remote Kimberley coast in the north of Western Australia.
Nina has lived in Kalumburu all her life with her family including her two children and grandchildren. Her language is Bela (a variety of the Wunambal language), her father’s country is the Cape Londonderry area and her mother’s is around the King George River area.
Nina’s sister runs Bela language courses and Nina looks after the children and teaches the language to the little ones.
Nina started painting many years ago after watching and learning from the established artists in the community including Kevin Waina and the East Kimberley’s most celebrated Wandjina artist, Lily Karadada.
Artwork Description
I have painted the Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) from my mother’s country. The Gwion Gwions in this area are happy figures, and almost appear to be dancing. The Gwions are believed to be the first people created by the Boss Wandjina. He gave them Law and Order to abide by. These rock art figures were discovered in the 1800’s by a pastoralist who was exploring the Kimberley. His name was Joseph Bradshaw, that’s why they are sometimes called Bradshaw figures. They are the hunting Gods, they tell us where the good places to hunt are and the places we should stay away from as well.
