Joy Petyarre / Desert Yam Seed Dreaming (JP123)

Joy Petyarre was born in 1965 at Boundary Bore in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory. She is the daughter of the late Glory Ngarla, a respected Utopian artist, and the sister of acclaimed artist Anna Price Petyarre. Growing up within one of Central Australia’s most recognised artistic families, Joy was surrounded by strong cultural traditions, women’s stories and creative practice from an early age.

Joy first learned the art of batik from her mother. This early experience helped shape her understanding of pattern, colour and design before she later began painting with acrylic on canvas.

Her artworks are distinguished by intricate dot work, layered fields of colour and flowing patterns that create a strong sense of rhythm and movement. Joy often paints stories associated with the Desert Yam and Bush Tobacco Plant, drawing upon the plants, ceremonies and ancestral knowledge connected to her Country.

Following the passing of her mother in 2002, Joy stepped away from painting for a period. With encouragement from her sister Anna, she eventually returned to her art and continued developing her own distinctive style.

Like her mother, Joy has a remarkable eye for colour. Her paintings range from subtle, earthy palettes to vibrant combinations of blue, green, pink, yellow and purple. Through repeated marks and gently shifting patterns, she creates richly textured works that reflect the abundance of the desert landscape and the cultural knowledge passed down through generations of women.

Joy’s artworks have been included in group exhibitions and are represented in significant Australian collections, including the Holmes à Court Collection and Artbank.

This painting depicts the seeds of the Desert Yam, an important native food traditionally gathered by Aboriginal women throughout the Utopia region of Central Australia.

The Desert Yam grows beneath the ground, while its spreading vines, leaves and flowers appear above the surface. Following seasonal rain, the plant grows strongly across the landscape before the edible tubers are carefully located and harvested.

Women use digging sticks to gather the yams, which may be eaten raw or cooked. Knowledge of where the plant grows, when it is ready to harvest and how it should be prepared has been passed from older women to younger generations over countless years.

The Desert Yam is also connected to important women’s ceremonies known as Awelye. During these ceremonies, women sing and dance the songlines associated with the plant, paying respect to Country and encouraging its continued growth and abundance.

Joy represents the seeds of the Desert Yam through countless layered marks that flow and ripple across the canvas. Their shifting colours and patterns suggest the spread of the plant across Country and the renewed life that follows rain.

Through this painting, Joy pays homage to the spirit of the Desert Yam in the hope that it will continue to regenerate and provide food for future generations.
