Nestled in the remote Tiwi Islands north of Darwin, Munupi Arts is a proud, wholly Tiwi-owned art centre located in Pirlangimpi on Melville Island. Since its formation in 1990, Munupi Arts has been a vital cultural stronghold, sustaining Tiwi traditions while embracing contemporary creative expression. Each artwork tells a story deeply rooted in Country, ceremony, and ancestral connection. Artists draw on knowledge passed down since time immemorial and a profound relationship with the land and sea. The results are breathtaking, from ochre paintings and intricate carvings to dynamic prints and beautiful pottery. Unique to Tiwi culture is the pwoja, a traditional ironwood painting comb used to create rhythmic, symbolic patterns, a technique featured prominently in many Munupi pieces.
