About the Artist
Melissa Nungarrayi Larry is a Luritja artist born in 1983 in Alice Springs and raised in Kintore, a remote community in the Western Desert, approximately 550 kilometres west of Alice Springs, near the Northern Territory and Western Australian border. Melissa grew up in Kintore with her mother, Carol Nampijinpa Larry, and three sisters. Following the loss of her father during childhood, her mother raised the four girls. Carol is also an accomplished Luritja artist, with family connections to Kiwirrkura in the Western Desert. Melissa attended school in Kintore before moving to Nyirripi, a remote Aboriginal community west of Yuendumu, where she met her future husband. The couple married and have five children. Her mother later joined her in Nyirripi, and both women have maintained their artistic practices through Warlukurlangu Artists, occasionally painting alongside one another. Melissa began painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in 2006. Established in Yuendumu in 1985, Warlukurlangu is an Aboriginal-owned and governed art centre supporting artists from Yuendumu and Nyirripi. Through its regular visits to Nyirripi, the centre provides artists with materials and opportunities to produce and exhibit their work. Melissa's paintings draw upon the Jukurrpa (Dreaming) stories associated with her mother's cultural heritage, reflecting the deep relationships between ancestral knowledge, Country and traditional law. A central subject in her work is Yumari Dreaming, associated with an important site of rock formations and rockholes west of Kintore in the Gibson Desert. Her paintings are characterised by an intricate arrangement of concentric circles, elongated oval forms, flowing lines and densely applied dots. These elements create rhythmic compositions that suggest the features and cultural significance of the desert landscape. While drawing upon traditional iconography, Melissa has developed a distinctive contemporary approach, experimenting freely with colour, scale and composition. Her works range from vibrant multicoloured paintings to more restrained palettes, in which carefully balanced colours and contrasting outlines emphasise the intricate patterns of her designs. Through her artwork, Melissa continues to share the cultural knowledge and ancestral stories connected to her family and Country, expressing enduring traditions through her own evolving artistic style.
