Artist Profile

Born: 1974
Language Group: Tiwi
Region: Tiwi Islands
Dreaming: Wild Pig (father’s side); Buffalo (mother’s side)
Alexandrina Kantilla is a Tiwi artist born in 1974 at Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island. Her father’s Wild Pig Dreaming and her mother’s Buffalo Dreaming connect her strongly to her Country, Warnatuwu, and to the ceremonial traditions that underpin much of Tiwi culture.
Alexandrina began painting in her twenties, learning by closely watching her family create designs for ceremony. She describes painting as “our way of life,” and her practice reflects this deep cultural grounding. Over the years she has developed a diverse skill set, working in natural ochres on Arches paper, four-colour lino block prints, batik, and textile design.
Although she practices across a wide range of mediums, Alexandrina is especially known for her batik silk scarves, created using Drimarine K dyes and Naphthol dyes. Her long, flowing scarves—often featuring intricate Tiwi motifs—have been widely admired and featured in multiple Ngaruwanajirri group exhibitions. They were notably showcased at the Darwin Supreme Court during the Festival of Darwin in 2006 and have continued to appear in national textile exhibitions celebrating Top End fibre and fabric traditions.
Alexandrina has worked as an artist with both Munupi and Ngaruwanajirri Arts over many years, developing her practice across the two studios. Her work has been exhibited widely across the Northern Territory, nationally, and in major travelling exhibitions.
