Chelsea Possum / Women’s Dreaming – My Great Grandmother’s Country (19962)

Chelsea Possum was born in Adelaide, South Australia, in September 1991. She comes from one of Australia’s most recognised Aboriginal artistic families and is the granddaughter of the celebrated artist Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri AO, whose work is represented in major public and private collections throughout Australia and internationally.

Chelsea is the second eldest daughter of senior artist Michelle Possum Nungurrayi and Heath Tjangala. Michelle is the youngest daughter of Clifford Possum and, together with her sister Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, was taught to paint by their father. Through this strong family lineage, Chelsea has inherited an important body of cultural knowledge, stories and artistic traditions.

Chelsea learnt to paint by watching and assisting her mother from a young age. Her works draw upon the Dreaming stories and women’s ceremonial traditions connected to the Country of her paternal great-grandmother, Long Rose Nungala. She combines this cultural inheritance with the bold imagery, detailed patterning and precise iconography associated with her grandfather, mother and aunt.

Her paintings are vibrant and intricately layered, bringing together ceremonial sites, pathways, waterholes, bush foods, flowers and other elements of Country. Each section is carefully connected through flowing lines and fine dot work, creating richly detailed compositions filled with movement, colour and life.

Alongside her sisters Khatija, Azeza and Melisha, Chelsea represents the third generation of artists within the Possum family. Through her paintings, she continues the important stories, cultural knowledge and artistic traditions passed down through her family, presenting them in richly detailed contemporary works with a soft and beautifully balanced palette.

In this painting, Chelsea depicts Women’s Dreaming stories connected to the Country of her paternal great-grandmother, Long Rose Nungala, around Tjukurla in the Western Desert of Central Australia.

The composition brings together many different elements of Country and women’s ceremonial life. Circular forms may represent important sites, waterholes and places where women gather, while the surrounding lines, pathways and repeated designs suggest movement across the landscape and the connections between these places. Bush foods, seeds, flowers and other natural resources are woven throughout the painting, reflecting the knowledge women carry of the land and its seasonal abundance.

Ceremonial sites hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. At these places, women come together to share knowledge and continue their Dreaming stories through song, dance, body painting and ceremony. Food, water and fire are essential during these gatherings, which may continue over several days.

Chelsea arranges these elements in a richly layered, almost patchwork-like composition. Each area contains its own designs and rhythms, yet all are connected through intricate fields of dot work and flowing lines. Her use of warm earth tones, soft pastels and vibrant accents gives the painting a strong contemporary presence while honouring the stories, Country and artistic traditions passed down through her family.
