Delvine Petyarre / Country (DP108)

Delvine Petyarre is an Anmatyerre artist from the Utopia region of Central Australia. Born in 1982, she grew up at Atneltyeye, or Boundary Bore, on her homelands and maintains strong connections to her Alhalkere Country.

Delvine comes from one of Utopia’s most significant artistic families. Her mother was the late Glory Ngale, a respected artist who was involved in the Utopia batik movement, and her father was Michael Kngwarreye. Her older sisters Anna Price Petyarre and Joy Petyarre are also accomplished artists, and her extended family includes celebrated Utopia artists Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Kudditji Kngwarreye.

Growing up surrounded by artists, Delvine learned both her cultural stories and painting skills within her family. She began painting as a young woman in the early 1990s, developing her practice over many years within the strong artistic traditions of Utopia. One of the important Dreamings inherited through her father’s Alhalkere Country is Atnwelarre, or Pencil Yam, while other major subjects in her work include My Country and Kame, or Yam Seed.

Over time, Delvine has developed a highly distinctive approach to painting Country. Using extraordinarily fine dot work, she creates topographical representations of the Utopia landscape, mapping dry riverbeds, sandhills, tracks, soakages, waterholes and significant places. Her intricate patterns follow the natural contours of the land, giving her paintings a strong sense of movement and depth.

Delvine is particularly recognised for her detailed black and white compositions, although colour also plays an important role in many of her works. Some paintings are almost entirely monochromatic, while others incorporate carefully controlled bands of colour that move through the composition, emphasising waterways, pathways and features of Country. Her older sisters Anna and Joy have both been important artistic influences, particularly in her use of colour and intricate dotting techniques.

Country remains central to Delvine’s practice. Her paintings reflect both the physical landscape and the cultural knowledge held within it, including water sources, bush foods, travel routes and places of ceremonial importance. Through these works, Delvine continues an Anmatyerre tradition in which knowledge of Country, its resources and the responsibilities associated with caring for it are maintained and passed between generations.

Now an established artist with a career spanning more than two decades, Delvine has exhibited in Australia and internationally. In 2024 she presented My Country, her first solo exhibition with Mbantua Gallery in Alice Springs. Her work continues to evolve while retaining the meticulous dotting, strong graphic structure and deep connection to Country that have become characteristic of her painting.

In Country, Delvine Petyarre depicts her Alhalkere Country and the landscape around Atneltyeye, or Boundary Bore, in the Utopia region of Central Australia. Viewed from above, the painting maps the contours of Country through sandhills, dry riverbeds, waterholes, travelling lines and culturally significant places.

Delvine’s intricate lines of dotting follow the natural formations of the landscape, creating pathways that wind across and through the composition. Circular forms represent waterholes, important sources of water within this dry environment, while flowing lines trace rivers, tracks and the connections between places. After rain, waterholes and riverbeds bring renewed life to Country, supporting bush foods and other plant life.

These places form part of a living cultural landscape. Women travel across Country gathering bush foods and medicines, visiting important sites and participating in ceremony. Knowledge of the land, its resources and the cultural responsibilities connected to it is passed from older generations to younger women, maintaining an enduring connection between people and Country.

Delvine’s finely controlled dotting creates a remarkable sense of movement, rhythm and depth across the surface. Some works are rendered entirely in black and white, while others incorporate bands of colour that move through the composition and draw attention to particular waterways, pathways and features of the landscape. Through Country, Delvine presents both a physical and cultural map of her homelands, expressing the deep connections between land, water, family, culture and generations of knowledge.
